UPSC IFoS Syllabus and Exam Pattern 2023

Union Public Service Commission Indian Forest Service 

The UPSC IFoS (Indian Forest Service) exam syllabus includes a Preliminary stage with General Studies and General Aptitude papers, followed by the Main Examination, featuring General English, General Knowledge, and two optional subjects. The optional subjects cover topics related to forestry, agriculture, and other sciences. The final selection involves a Personality Test (Interview).

What is the Syllabus of UPSC IFoS Exam?

The Preliminary Examination consists of two papers, Paper-I and Paper-II. Both papers are objective type and serve as a screening test.

The following is the UPSC IFoS Preliminary Exam Pattern:

  • The Prelims exam is a qualifying exam.
  • The prelims exam UPSC IFoS is the same as the UPSC IAS Prelims exam.
  • There are two papers GS I and CSAT, both objective in nature.
  • Each question in the General Studies paper carries 2 marks.
  • Each question in the Civil Service Aptitude Test paper carries 2.5 marks.
  • There is a 1/3 mark deduction for every incorrect answer.

Paper I:-

  • Current events of national and international importance 
  • History of India and Indian National Movement Indian and World Geography- Physical, Social, Economic Geography of India and the World. 
  • Indian Polity and Governance- Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc. 
  • Economic and Social Development- Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector Initiatives, etc. 
  • General issues on Environmental ecology, Biodiversity, and Climate Change – that do not require subject specialization. 
  • General Science.

Paper II:-

  • Comprehension Interpersonal skills including communication skills; 
  • Logical reasoning and analytical ability 
  • Decision making and problem-solving.
  • General mental ability 
  • Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude, etc.) (Class X level), Data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency, etc. – Class X level)

Mains Examination

The following is the UPSC IFoS Mains Exam Pattern:

  • The UPSC IFoS Mains exam is absolutely separate from the IAS (UPSC CSE) exam.
  • There are 6 papers in the Indian Forest Service Mains Exam.
  • Each paper is a descriptive type.
  • Each paper is for a duration of 3 hours.
  • There are two optional subjects to be chosen among the given list of subjects.

Paper I (General English):-

  • Candidates will be required to write an essay in the English language. 
  • Other questions will be designed to test their understanding of workman and English like the use of words. Passages will usually be set for a summary.

Paper-II (General Knowledge):-

  • General Knowledge and knowledge of current events and of such matters of everyday observation and experience in their scientific aspects as may be expected of an educated person who has not made a special study of any scientific subject.
